We are a highly successful School Direct provider offering training places in Primary and Secondary, working in partnership with successful schools across the North West, invested in teacher education.
Our programme differs from other, more traditional teacher training routes in that our trainees will be placed in a home school for the majority of their training. A short, 6 week placement will be done in a complementary setting and a piece of action research will be undertaken during this time.
The most striking difference is the university involvement. Liverpool John Moores University deliver the academic programme on site, at Turton School, one day a week. There is no long commute to campus and the training is personalised and bespoke. You have subject pedagogy sessions with tutors from LJMU and have a personal tutor (subject led) on site too. This is what makes our teacher training programme so personalised.
In 2020/2021, we plan to develop and extend our programme, to further develop high quality training that is tailored to suit the needs of all our partnership schools. Working with LJMU strengthens the support, guidance, training and development opportunities for schools and trainees. LJMU is highly regarded across the North West and is the best Initial Teacher Training provider in Merseyside. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work collaboratively, sharing best practice and further increasing the breadth of expertise and the quality of our provision.
We have many years of experience in offering Initial Teacher Training, which has led to a resoundingly positive reputation with our partnership schools and our university partner. Trainees leave our programme as highly employable NQT’s. Our trainee into employment figure exceeds national figures, with 99% of our trainees in employment by September 2019. We are proud that the majority of our trainee teachers go onto teach in schools across the North West.
We work with up to sixty trainees each year developing a personalised teacher training programme for each person. Continual improvement is at the heart of the work that we do, and by offering a year-long placement we feel that trainees will reap the benefits of the expertise and time that our expert ITT Mentors will invest. Importantly, a longer placement provides the pupils and the school with continuity. The advantage of this is that trainees see themselves as part of the whole school community.
We are also happy to offer a PGCE which has active research at its core, high academic expectations and a focus on developing and nurturing reflective teachers.
Our aim is simple; for School Direct at Turton partnership schools to work together to shape the future of teaching. We want to develop resilient practitioners who are passionate about education and determined in their own desire to influence the life chances of young people. The best way to do this is through school-based training.
