St Ambrose Barlow is a fantastic place to work and learn. We provide unique school based Primary and Secondary teacher training opportunities in partnership with the Outstanding Buile Hill SCITT. This path into teaching is a great way to gain the qualifications and practical skills you need to become a teacher. Whether you have just finished a degree, or have been working in a career, it allows you to combine high quality teacher training with actually doing and learning on the job.
We are based in Swinton in Salford on major train and bus routes with easy access to the motorway. At St Ambrose Barlow we create an environment in which staff, pupils and trainee teachers alike feel valued and supported. We have worked with trainee teachers for many years and we fully recognise how much vibrancy, enthusiasm and drive they can offer to a school community. We are very proud of our outcomes for all previous graduates of our programme – 100% of whom have secured a teaching position and 100% who graduated with Outstanding or Good. We are immensely proud of the fact that we are training future teachers locally and you will most likely find some of our former trainees now working and making a difference within the schools you are placed in including our own.
We are fully committed to the development of high quality and talented teachers. The schools we work alongside are equally excellent, both in terms of community spirit, results and in the development of teachers and prospective teachers. Students across the partnership are happy, friendly and well-behaved and are at the heart of everything we do. Both staff and students are ambitious and confident.
You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning. Our teachers are excellent practitioners with exemplary behaviour management skills and are eager to share their skills, knowledge and practice with the next generation of teachers. All our mentors have undertaken a rigorous training programme to develop their mentoring skills. This includes coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills. You will be fully supported throughout your course by your subject mentor and professional mentor, as well as by your department colleagues and peers.
The Secondary course covers the 11-18 age range and the Primary course covers the 5-11 age range. Excellent enrichment is part of the course including experience with post-16 learners, students with specific learning needs and time spent in a PRU (pupil referral unit). This will be enhanced by attendance at the Buile Hill SCITT and Masters days at Manchester Metropolitan University. You will receive a full PGCE as part of this course. We have the capacity to be flexible and make the course unique to you and your goals for the future including leadership. By the end of your course you will feel ready and confident to embark on your teaching career and you will receive full support in securing your first teaching position.
What will your training really be like?
