About Us

Mersey Boroughs ITT Partnership is an accredited SCITT which grew from the highly successful School Direct Partnership run by the lead school St Mary & St Paul’s CE Primary School in Knowsley – one of the original pathfinder School Direct programmes. A partnership of 20+ primary schools working across Merseyside: Knowsley, St Helens, Halton, Liverpool, Sefton and Wigan. The schools in our partnership share a common vision: to train and develop outstanding teachers for the future.

Our programme gives trainees the chance to spend a significant amount of time in school, becoming part of a school team and learning from excellent current practitioners both in school and through our taught programme. Our aim is quality throughout the programme. Top quality candidates selected through a rigorous interview process; Placements in schools that offer quality mentoring and support; High quality training delivered by outstanding current practitioners; Quality Masters-level input from our university partner; Top quality support throughout the programme from experienced tutors and the programme team; free access to our quality NQT and RQT development programmes for all of our successful trainees, ensuring support continues into their first year of teaching and beyond.

Our Initial Teacher Training programme provides an excellent balance of school led and university based training. We aim to ensure that our trainees graduate with the knowledge, skills and personal attributes required to become an outstanding teacher. The programme results in the award of QTS, PGCE and the opportunity to gain Masters credits.

Trainees are assigned a ‘home school’ where they are based during the autumn term. The first half term blends time in school with a taught programme delivered by outstanding practitioners, building up to a first teaching ‘block’ leading up to Christmas. Trainees then move on to their second school in the spring term, again combining time in school with taught sessions but also benefiting from a series of ‘broadening experience’ activities. The summer term is spent back in the ‘home school’ where trainees are able to put all of the skills and knowledge that they’ve developed together in delivering their final ‘block’ of teaching. During the year trainees also complete a number of tasks that will support them in meeting the standards required for the award of QTS and will also complete pieces of assessed work linked to their PGCE study.

We feel that our programme is rigorous but really successful in preparing trainees for a career in teaching and to become outstanding teachers in their own right. Feedback from our successful cohorts and their Head Teachers has been overwhelmingly positive and we’ve been delighted to be able to continue our relationship with our former trainees through the programmes of NQT support and RQT development that we offer.

Philip Eastwood – Director of ITT

Philip is the Director of the SCITTs School Direct programme, as well as being Acting Deputy Headteacher at St Mary & St Paul’s. He has taught across Key Stages 1 and 2 and is also an experienced Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). Philip was also an Advanced Skills Teacher with a specialism in Initial Teacher Training, and in that role has been closely involved with university partners. Although most of Philip’s time is now spent running our ITT programmes, Philip is still a serving practitioner and has a (small) regular teaching commitment in school.

Gill Makin – SCITT Manager

Gill has worked in the Partnership since we set up our first School Direct cohort, joining us having previously worked in partnerships and school placements at a local university. Gill brings a wealth of experience to the role and makes sure that the SCITT and its programmes run smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
