About Us

Our Programme offers QTS, PGCE and 30% of an MA. This experienced partnership identifies potentially outstanding teachers, focuses on their personal, intellectual and professional development and provides challenging, stimulating, inspirational, and personalised training across Pennine Lancashire. The schools in the Partnership are based in Clitheroe, Accrington, Nelson and Rawtenstall. The Programme’s scope, with its Minor Specialisms in SEND and Behaviour Management and which includes sixth form experience and training in a range of settings, is designed to produce outstanding teachers for the 21st Century.
Our programme has several unique features, most notably a focus on Child Development and an understanding of the relationship between children’s chronological age and developmental stage, which runs as a thread throughout the year. It is to this end that you will gain experience in an Early Years setting, Primary School, and sixth form. To ensure that you gain a full understanding of how mainstream education fits into a wider spectrum of provision, you will visit a Pupil Referral Unit and Special School. These visits will inform your choice of Minor Specialisms in Positive Behaviour Management or Disabilities and Special Educational Needs (SEND). The professional studies programme gives you a sound grounding in subject-specific pedagogy, giving you the confidence to teach the full age and ability range.

Staff & Team

“Having first taught at Alder Grange School in 1996 as a science teacher, I taught for two years at another Rossendale school before returning to Alder Grange. In 2001 I was fortunate enough to be appointed as a Year Manager, in which role I continued until 2006 when I gained an Assistant Head post in school. The role was varied and interesting; in my work on Equalities, for example, I found myself visiting schools in the Northwest of England to make assessments for the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard on behalf of the SSAT. As part of my work within school I worked with Edge Hill University, supporting PGCE students as the school’s Professional Mentor.
When we began our initial work on the Pennine Lancashire SCITT, I was able to work alongside Sara Pinder, Iain Hulland (our former headteacher) and Nicola Whiteside from Edge Hill on developing the programme. It is from this work that I have quickly gained a great deal of experience in ITE and we have now seen two successful cohorts of trainees gain employment in local schools.”

“Having first joined Alder Grange Community & Technology School in 2001 as a Design and Technology Teacher, I took on the role as School Co-ordinator for AfL in 2009. Since then, I have worked with LEA National Strategy Consultants for AfL to develop a coaching programme through paired lesson observations to embed and enhance AfL throughout school. I have developed and delivered staff inset on AfL and other aspects of teaching and learning at both curriculum leaders and whole staff meeting forums on a routine basis. From the work initiated by these insets and training given to the ITTs in school, I have worked with Edge Hill University in the delivery of presentations to all PGCE trainees.
As Link Tutor I am responsible for ensuring the consistency of assessment judgements across the partnership and for intervention work with trainees as and when needed.”

“I joined the Senior Leadership Team at Marsden Heights Community College in 2015, having been a Head of Faculty for 8 years and Professional Mentor/ITT school lead for 6 years. I have been the School Lead and member of the strategic Board for the Pennine Lancashire SCITT since its inception in 2011-12. I have held the same role in the Pennine Lancashire School Direct partnership over the same period and have now assumed the Executive Lead role for the partnership. As part of this role, I have collaborated with 3 other schools to design and implement a SCITT training programme and a School Direct programme with 6 other schools and a Higher Education Institution. I am able to support Schools who are thinking of becoming involved in the School Led ITT training routes and also those who may be already involved. I have been teaching in the Secondary phase for over 20 years and have previously held pastoral leadership roles as well as leading academic teams and ITT.”
